Ten USA Sailors Seized By Iran in Persian Gulf; Iran Charges that Sailors Were Spying and Demands Apology From USA Before it Will Consider Release; UPDATE: Americans Free After Apology

BALTIMORE, Maryland January 13, 2016 - Ten USA Sailors were freed by Iran early Wednesday after the USA apologized to the Islamiic nation for allowing their ships to stray into Iranian waters in the Persian Gulf.  The ten sailors were aboard two small American ships which were seized by the Iranian Navy on Tuesday.  Iran charged that the Americans were spying, and some or all of the Americans were said to have been questioned by Iranian authorities.

The New York Times reported that the Pentagon claimed one of the two American boats experienced mechanical problems while on a routine mission in the Persian Gulf.  The ship was said to have been en route from Kuwait to Bahrain when the problems began.  A military spokesperson said that the USA lost touch with the two ships shortly before they were seized.

The Obama Administration said shortly before the release that it had obtained assurances from Iran that the ten Americans would be returned very soon, perhaps as soon as Wednesday, January 13.  But early this morning it was reported that Iran had begun to question the captured Americans. An Iranian spokesperson told the New York Times that the sailors were being held in good conditions and were being treated with "Islamic Compassion."  In London, the Telegraph reported that Iran was demanding an apology from the USA before it would consider releasing the ten sailors.
