Burnley Blitz Leave Charlton With Only Blanks

TOWSON, Maryland March 22, 2014 - At first and for a bit, Charlton's gamely side was on display for the home fans. For a while, they held Burnley at bay. With seven minutes until half, Ashley Barnes changed everything, scoring his first goal since arriving from Brighton in January. Ten minutes after the break, Charlton's Dorian Dervite fouled Sam Vokes in the box, and the prolific Vokes converted easily, according to the BBC. Michael Kightly tallied a bit before time to round out the very road trip.

The Claret needed the win to keep their ten point lead over their nearest pursuers. QPR did in Middlesbrough, 3-1, and Derby County crushed Nottingham Forest, 5-0. Burnley did pick up two critical points on Leicester, which drew with the Blackburn Rovers at a goal apiece. Burnley now trails the league-leaders by five points going into the big match-up next Saturday at Leicester. The top of the table looks like this: Leicester has 81 points, Burnley has 76, Derby and QPR have 66, Wigan now has 62 and Reading has 59. The season ends the first week of May.
