BALTIMORE, Maryland March 22, 2014 - Senior Jake Stinnett struck out 14 batters while throwing 8 shut-out innings, and Blake Schmitt drove in three runs with a bases loaded double in a six-run Maryland fifth inning as the Terrapins hammered No. 7 North Carolina State, 10-0, in an ACC game at Shipley Field in College Park.
Stinnett improved to 3-3, and gave up only four hits to the Wolfpack while improving his ERA to 2.46. He now leads the NCAA in strikeouts with 51. Last night's starter for North Carolina State, Carlos Rodon, led Stinnett by five strikeouts going in to the game, but Rodon finished with 8 strikeouts, falling one behind Stinnett, Maryland improved to 14-6 overall and 3-4 in the ACC. North Carolina State slipped to the exact same record overall and in the conference as the unranked Terps. Both teams are tied for fourth in the ACC's Atlantic Division. Going into Saturday, Clemson is on top of the division at 6-1. Florida State is in second place at 5-2. Wake Forest is 4-4 and in third place. Clemson and Florida State play a huge doubleheader today at Clemson. Maryland is now 4-6 against Top 30 teams (Florida was in the Top 30 when they played the Terps in Gainesville early in the season. They have slipped out of the Top 30 but are still receiving votes and went into this weekend at 13-7).
The people who are doing the voting are asleep at the switch when it comes to Maryland. The Terps have not received a single vote all season long. Florida State is ranked number one. The Seminoles are 17-2 and swept then seventh ranked North Carolina State last weekend in Tallahassee. One of Florida State's two losses is to Maryland.
Last Night, the Terps broke on top with a single run in the bottom of the first. The run scored on an error. Rodon was charged with 8 runs in 4 and two-thirds innings, but not one of them were earned as the Wolfpack committed four errors. Maryland pushed its lead to 2-0 in the fourth when they scored a run on Krysthian Leal's fielder's choice. Maryland broke it open in the fifth when they scored six times, the last three on Schmitt's bases loaded double. The Terps added two runs in the eighth, the first when Scmitt scored from first on Kyle Convissar's long double to center field. The second scored when Mike Montville's two-out single scored Tim Lewis, who had pinch ran for Convissar. The two teams continue their three game set at 2 pm today.
