Maryland Crushes Powerful Virginia Commonwealth, 12-1

BALTIMORE, Maryland May 7, 2014 - Five Maryland pitchers combined to limit a very good Virginia Commonwealth team to three hits, and Maryland exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning en route to an easy 12-1 victory over a Virginia Commonwealth team that came into the game having already won 32 games. It was Maryland's second win over the Rams this season. The Terps downed VCU, 5-2, at Shipley Field on April 1.

Zach Morris, Bobby Ruse, Jared Price, Brandon Casas and Alex Robinson all threw at least one full inning for the Terrapins, with Ruse picking up the win with three and one-third innings of one-hit relief. Morris started and was apparently on a pitch count as he exited after his 50th pitch, having gone two and two-thirds innings, giving up the only Ram score and two hits. Price, Casas and Robinson each pitched one hitless inning.

Brandon Lowe, who has been hitting in the no. 3 spot in the batting order for Maryland since last weekenda series with Notre Dame, knocked in a career-high five runs with a two-run single in the third, a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and an RBI single and a bases loaded walk in the seven-run Maryland sixth inning. Lamonte Wade knocked in Maryland's first run in the third inning with a double, and had two RBIs on the night. Nick Cieri was the other Terrapin with a multi-hit game, going 2-3 at the DH.

The Terps improved to 29-19 overall and can hit the 30 win mark by winning tonight when they play Towson at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen. Game time is 7 pm.
