Terps Win Second Straight over Notre Dame; Freshman Shawaryn Equals School Record With 8th Win

BALTIMORE, Maryland May 4, 2014 - Keep telling yourself: he is only a freshman. Mike Shawaryn, Maryland's outstanding starting pitcher, is only a freshman. Today, he held down Notre Dame's Fighting Irish to lead the Terps to a 6-2 win, Shawaryn pitched into the eighth inning before handing the game over to southpaw Ben Brewster, who went the final two and one-third innings to register his second save. Shawaryn, with the win, improves to 8-3. In the history of Maryland Baseball, no pitcher has won more than eight games in a season.

The Irish broke on top in this game, getting a two out, two-run homer from Ryan Bull in the second inning. They would be the only runs allowed by Maryland pitching all afternoon. The Terps started their comeback in the fourth inning, and took the lead for good in the process. Lamont Wade and Brandon Lowe opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After Jose Cuas flew out to center field, Blake Schmit smashed a double into right field, scoring Wade and advancing Lowe to third base. Lowe scored to tie the game on a safety squeeze bunt by Tim Lewis. Maryland picked up a third run in the inning on a throwing error. The Terps went ahead 4-2 an inning later when Lowe doubled, scoring Charlie White, who had singled and taken second on an infield ground out. The Terps opened up a 6-2 lead in the seventh thanks to some aggressive base running and a bases loaded single by Tim Lewis. White opened the seventh with a single, and he took second on Wade's sacrifice bunt. The Irish made the mistake of walking Lowe intentionally, because he was no sooner at first when the Terps executed a double steal, with White going to third and Lowe to second. After the Irish got Cuas to fly out, they intentionally walked Schmit to load the bases. Lewis promptly smashed a single to right field, scoring both White and Lowe.

Even with Bull's two run homer, the Irish only notched a total of four hits off of Shawaryn and Brewster. Maryland, which beat the Irish on Friday, 2-0, behind Jake Stinnett's masterful 13-strikeout, four hit complete game shut out, will attempt to sweep this final home series in the ACC when the teams meet today at 1 pm. Maryland scored the games only runs in the first inning on Jose Cuas two-RBI single. Stinnett now leads the ACC in strikeouts with 107, and complete games with four. With the two wins, Maryland is now 11-14 in the ACC and 27-19 overall. The Irish fell to 4-19 in the ACC and 17-29 overall. The two teams complete the three game series tomorrow (Sunday) at 1 pm at Shipley Field in College Park. It will be Maryland's final ACC Conference Home Game ever, as they move next season to the Big Ten.
