BALTIMORE, Maryland May 12, 2014 - The man who says he is the leader of the self-proclaimed Peoples Republic of Donetsk says 90 percent of all voters in a referendum held Sunday want to leave Ukraine and join Russia. He told reporters, including The Guardian, that Russia should "absorb" his fledgling nation. EU leaders, meanwhile, were meeting today in Brussels, Belgium and increased sanctions against Russia are on the agenda. In Poland, Polish leaders issued a statement saying that the results of the referendum will not be recognized. It was noted that there were no steps taken to keep people from voting multiple time. It was also noted that Masked Gunmen were posted at polling places. And it was well known which way these gunmen wanted the people to vote. A Fox News correspondent, Greg Palkot, who visited a number of polling places said that he witnessed any number of voting irregularities. He noted that he made no effort to see them and that they just happened as he watched, giving indication of how widespread they were.
Denis Pushilin, the very same Separatist Leader whose "helpers" distributed documents telling all Jewish residents of Donetsk to register with the Peoples Republic of Donetsk and at the same time reveal each and every financial holding, including jewelry and investments, or risk having all of those assets confiscated by the new government, told reporters today in Donetsk, In Russia, however, a spokesman seemed to say that a Crimea-style annexation isn't what Russian Strong Man Vladimir Putin is going for. Instead, the spokesperson believes that the interim government in Kiev should open a serious dialogue with the Eastern Ukraine factions, something the government there has not opposed.
A Russian publication which parrots the Government Line, "The Voice," quoted Pushilin on its web page today. "We, the people of Donetsk People's Republic, proclaim the independence pf DNR following the results of the referendum held on May 11, and the manifest of the independence of DNR," Pushilin is said to have proclaimed.
(The same Russian web page, which is in English and meant for western consumption, carried a front-page story on alleged collaboration between the United States and Nazi Germany in the "Ukraine and Worldwide." Speaking for myself, I know that stories like these add credence to other posts on their web site.
In Poland, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that Russia's continued violation of national borders and its willingness to violate national sovreignty on the flimsiest of pretexts had necessarily become the focal point of all of Poland's foreign policy initiatives. Giving his annual summary of foreign policy issues, Sikorski minced no words about Russia, in contrast to other European nations which seem reluctant to move against the Eastern Giant because of the oil and natural gas that are sold by Putin's people.
Said Sikorski, as quoted by the media source "The Warsaw Voice:" “Russian operations in Ukraine evidently violate the principles of peaceful coexistence of nations. The use of armed forces under the pretext of protecting a national minority, which – let’s be clear – is not persecuted in Ukraine, is legally unacceptable and politically dangerous."
According to Sikorski, Russia follows every Russian move with very particular interest. He believes that Europe needs an ambitious defense policy over and above NATO. NATO membership is a tangible element of Poland's security which could be further strengthened by EU's military integration.
