China Releases New Satellite Image of Large Object in Indian Ocean; Another Huge Upset! Stephen F. Austin Shocks VCU in OT

BALTIMORE, Maryland March 21, 2014 (11:00 pm) - Three days ago a Chinese satellite took a picture of a large (74') object in the southern Indian Ocean, some 60 miles away from the place where a USA satellite photographed other objects five days earlier. An exhautive and ongoing search has not found the objects photographed by the American satellite. Nevertheless, ships and planes are now dispatched to the spot where the Chinese satellite said they were three days ago. Malaysian Authorities announced the discovery at their daily press briefing in Kuala Lumpur Saturday evening, local time. Hishammuddin Hussein, the acting Malaysian Defense Minister, said he had no further information. According to Fox, the Chinese have not explained why there was a delay from the time the photo was taken until it was released. Fox said that China has dispatched several ships to the scene photographed.

Lumberjacks! Lumberjacks! The Lumberjacks! The Lumberjacks? They are the owners of the nation's second-longest Division I winning streak. They have won 29 straight games, and yet have never come close to cracking the Top 25. They play in a little-known conference. They are located in a small Texas town. They played the only big name school on the schedule - Texas - early in the season teams of note early in the season at Austin and lost, but only by ten points. They lost another road game eight days later at East Tennessee State, but that was it. They were the regular season and tournament champions in the Southland Conference. Their conference record was 18-0. They beat Sam Houston State by 19 points in the tournament championship. They are the pride of Nacogdoches, Texas (That is where the school is). Last night they shocked VCU, 77-75, in Overtime. They are now, 32-2. This is the same VCU that jumped into the national spotlight a year or two ago when they beat Duke in similar circumstances. But now, they are the big established team. Tonight, after a good start, Stephen F. Austin fell behind VCU and their relentless "havoc!" defense by double digits in the second half and looked for all the world like they were finished. Wrong. They somehow regrouped, stayed cool and started to chip away. But they were still down four points and VCU was at the line shooting two free throws with ten seconds left. But Jordan Burgess of the Rams missed both free throws and Thomas Walkup, a 6'4" point guard, snared the rebound and raced up the court, weaving through Ram defenders as he went. He barged into the lane without slowing down, drawing defenders with him, then stopped and zipped a pass to Desmond Haymon, a 6'3" senior, standing in three-point land and wide open. With nerves of steel Haymon launched the shot and then, improbably, was fouled by a flying Ram defender, JaQuan Lewis. The shot got nothing but net and now Haymon would go to the line with a chance to tie the game. There were 3.6 seconds left. Haymon, again with nerves of steel, hit the free throw and VCU couldn't get a good shot, leading to Overtime. In OT, Haymon again hit a critical three and the Lumberjacks won. Jacob Parker led Stephen F. Austin with 22 points. Haymon added 17 and Walkup had 12 and a stunning ten rebounds. They will now play the Tennessee Volunteers on Sunday. The Volunteers won a play-in game against Iowa on Wednesday, then whacked Massachusetts Friday to advance to Sunday. There were these other scores Friday: Undefeated Wichita State ended Cal-Poly's (14-20) dream, 64-37. The Shockers are 35-0. Virginia (29-6) fell behind the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina (21-13) by five points at halftime, but stormed back in the second half to win, 70-59. Arizona (31-4) struggled past Weber State (19-12), 68-59. Iowa State (27-7) crushed North Carolina Central (28-6), 93-75, but lost star George Niang for the rest of the tournament to a broken foot. Niang had 24 points before the injury. The Eagles had their 20 game winning streak broken. Kansas (25-9) broke away from a halftime tie to beat Eastern Kentucky, 80-69. Creighton (27-7) beat back Louisiana-Lafayette (23-12), 76-66. Stanford (22-12) edged New Mexico (27-7), 58-53. North Carolina (24-9) rallied late to edge Providence, (22-12), 79-77. UCLA (27-5) pulled away from Tulsa (21-13), 76-59. Baylor (25-11) beat back Nebraska (19-13), 74-60. Gonzaga (29-6) out-scored Oklahoma State (21-13), 85-77. Memphis (24-9) beat George Washington (24-9), 71-66. Kentucky (25-10) edged Kansas State (20-13), 56-49. In the NIT on Friday, Towson (25-10) won at East Tennessee State (19-16), 83-77, and Belmont (26-9) held off Robert Morris (22-14), 82-71. In games today, Pitt and Florida play at 12:15 pm EST, St. Louis collides with Louisville at 2:45 pm, Texas and Michigan square off at 5:15 pm, EST, North Dakota State and San Diego State play at 6:10 pm, EST, Dayton and Syracuse tangle at 7:10 pm EST, Oregon and Wisconsin collide at 7:45 pm, Harvard takes on Michigan State at 8:40 pm EST, and Connecticut and Villanova play at 9:40 pm EST.

Saint Francis and the Birds
by Seamus Heaney (Irish, 1939 - 2013)
from his Book, "Death of a Naturalist," Faber & Faber, Limited, copyright 1966

When Francis preached love to the birds,
They listened, fluttered, throttled up
Into the blue like a flock of words

Released for fun from his holy lips.
Then wheeled back, whirred about his head.
Pirouetted on brothers' capes.

Danced on the wing, for sheer joy played
And sang, like images took flight,
Which was the best poem Francis made,

His argument true, his tone light.

The Letter of St. James
Chapter 4, Verses 14 through 17

Chapter 4. Verse 14. ...whereas you do not know about tomorrow. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Verse 15. Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and we shall do this or that.." Verse 16. As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. Verse 17. Whoever knows what is right to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
