Ukrainiam Premier League Matches Go Forward, Upheaval or Not

BALTIMORE, Maryland March 16, 2014 (1:15 pm) - Despite the upheaval in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Premier League started play again today - of all days - including a game in the Crimea in the middle of the unreast, with an army of occupation, 20,000 strong, in the streets. League-leading Shakhtar Donetsk went on the road and shut out Metalurg Zaporozhye, 3-0. Shakhtar now has 13 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses, good for 41 points. Second place Dnipro kept pace, beating FC Sevastopol, 3-0. Dnipro is now at 10 wins, 5 draws and only 2 losses, good for 35 points. As this post is written, Third place Metalist Kharkiv is tied with Hoverla Uzhhorod, 1-1, in the 18th minute at Kharkiv. At the moment, Kharkiv has two games in hand versus Shakhtar. Kharkiv at the moment is 9 wins, 6 draws and but one loss, good for 33 points. If they take advantage of their opportunities, they could be breathing down the league-leaders neck before they realize it. Dynamo Kiev is tied with Metalist Kharkiv. Kiev has 10 wins, 3 draws and 4 losses. They are now locked in a scoreless tie with Tavriya (2 wins, 2 draws, 13 losses) in the 23rd minute at Tavriya. Tavriya and Metalurg Zaporozhye (1 win, 5 draws, 12 losses) are tied for last place, each with only 8 points. Because Arsenal Kyiv dropped out, only one team will be relegated, and it looks as if it will be one of these two teams. Hoverla Uzhhorod is the team immediately ahead of them. Hoveria has 4 wins, 2 draws and 11 losses, good for 14 points. Hoveria, as reported above, is tied in their game today in the 18th minute.

In other Ukrainian Premier League matches, all of which are full time, Vorskla Poltava and Zorya played to a 1-1 draw, Volyn Lutsk defeated Karpaty, 1-0, and Met. Donetsk, playing at home in that violence-prone city, defeated Mariupol, 1-0
