Attacks on Bulgarian Journalist leads to Demonstration

BALTIMORE, Maryland April 7, 2014 - Concerned about the increase in attacks on journalists, Bulgarian Journalists staged a protest Friday to bring attention to the problem. In particular, the journalists wanted to highlight the second arson attack on the personal vehicle of a Bulgarian televison reporter.

The Sofia News Agency in Sofia, Bulgaria, reported the protest over this past weekend. The affected reporter, Genka Shikerova, had her personal vehicle torched last Tuesday night while it was parked in front of her home. It was the second time since September, 2013 that Shikerova has had her vehicle set afire and destroyed. The protest involved dozens of journalists in front of the Bulgarian Interior Minister in Sofia.

Ms. Shirekerova had recently interviewed the heads of the two parties which together make up Bulgaria's coalition government. Both alleged that the other party was responsible for personnel decisions that sparked protests by both sides. In an interview with the journalists' group "Reporters without Borders," she said she could not believe that those interviews led to the arson attacks. She has neither asked for police protection or agreed to accept her employer's offer to hire a body guard.

Police do not have a lead in either arson case.
