Orioles Pummel Yankees, 13-4 as Jones, Young and Wieters Homer; Maryland Whacks George Mason, 11-0

BALTIMORE, Maryland April 8, 2014 - After struggling mightily for their first seven games, the Orioles broke out today in New York against the Yankees. Delmon Young, Adam Jones and Matt Wieters homered and Josh Stinson lowered his ERA to 1.50 with two shutout innings of relief as the Orioles hammered the Yankees, 14-5. Wei-Yin Chen was not overly effective, surrendering four runs and nine hits over five innings, but on a day when the Birds bashed Yankee pitching for 20 hits, it was good enough. Every Oriole starter had at least two hits except Matt Wieters, but Wieters only hit was a home run that seemed to just keep going. The official Orioles twitter writer said of Wieters' blast, "Wieters drills a long home run into the left-field seats, his 2nd of the season. The #Orioles now lead, 13-4. [another tweet:] There's crushing a home run, and then there's what Matt Wieters did to this baseball."

Maryland improved to 20-10 on the season (6-8 in the ACC), with an 11-0 rout of George Mason in Fairfax, Virginia. George Mason fell to 17-11. Jake Drossner started and went five scoreless innings for Maryland to get the win and improve to 4-0. Brandon Lowe had three hits for the Terps, and four other Maryland hitters had two hits. The Terps scored during six of their nine at bats. A five-run fourth inning broke the game wide open. After Drossner pitched the first five, he was relieved by Jared Price, who went two innings and struck out six. After Price, Robert Galligan and Jamie Pashuck eached pitched a scoreless inning, each striking out two Patriot hitters. For the game, Maryland hurlers had 13 strike outs.

Maryland has arguably turned into one of ten or fifteen best teams in the country, and they are certainly the best team that nobody knows about. They toil in the best conference in the country, but they do so without the history of success that the southern schools in the conference all possess. Maryland is unranked. They were ranked only once, for one week, and then only in the two more minor polls. One had them no. 24 and the other had them no. 25. And yet, in the RPI they are currently no. 13 and have been as high as no. 8. The week they were no. 8 they were the only unranked team in the top 25 of the RPI. How can all of this be? Maryland plays the sixth toughest schedule in the country. They are 6-8 after playing all of the tough teams in the conference save for Virginia and Miami. They do not hit home runs. All they do is win or, when they lose to the really good teams, they take them down to the wire. They have wins over Florida State, Florida, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia Commonwealth and Liberty. They have three wins over North Carolina State. Each of these teams are either ranked or getting votes to be ranked. In the coach's poll this week, Maryland received not one vote. If the NCAA uses these facts as a pretext to keep them out of the national tournament, a real wrong will have been done to them, and the season will end without anybody knowing who they are except the teams they have beaten.

The Terps return home tomorrow for a 6 pm game against Mount Saint Mary's. The Mount is 8-11 on the season. They have been a full victim of the long, cold winter, having had seven games postponed or outright cancelled. They are 2-2 in the Northeast Conference. The highlight of their season was an 8-2 win over Davidson back in February. They have also beaten Lehigh once and Central Connecticut State twice. They have four wins - two double-header wins on consecutive days - against the New York Institute of Technology. Their eleven losses include two against powerful Mississippi State, 13-1 and 10-1, and two each to Maryland-Eastern Shore and Central Connecticut. After beating Lehigh in Florida in February, they lost three straight to the Engineers in March. Their roster includes two graduate students who pitch.

And Maryland has something to play for in this game. Last season they managed to lose to the Mount.
