Maryland rips VCU, Liberty; Orioles split first two, with standings

BALTIMORE, Maryland April 3, 2014 - Let me take a stab at catching up with sports. Maryland has played two non-conference games this week, winning both. The Orioles have opened their season, so far splitting a pair with the Defending World Champion Red Sox. After winning opening day, they lost last night despite a second home run by Nelson Cruz. Dustin Pedroia made a spectacular play, ranging far behind the second base bag with a diving stab, then getting a lot on a long throw to first to get J.J. Hardy.

Maryland
Against two straight opponents, Maryland erupted for multiple runs in the sixth inning to break open a tight game. It was enough to win both. Tuesday, the Terps beat a very good Virginia Commonwealth team, 5-2. On Wednesday, Maryland erupted for six runs in the sixth inning and went on to defeat tenacious Liberty, 8-3. On Tuesday, Bobby Ruse picked up his third win of the season by scattering four hits over six innings and surrendering only one run. With VCU leading, 1-0, in the fifth, Maryland battled back to tie on an RBI double by Jose Cuas, who played shortstop and went four for four with two runs batted in. The Terps then broke it open an inning later, scoring four runs. Three of the runs scored on bases loaded walks and the fourth on Cuas' infield single. Lamont Wade, however, opened the inning with a double.

“He’s an absolute strike thrower,” said Maryland Coach John Szefc on the team's web page. “He’s really an efficient arm, gives up one run, four hits, only strikes out two guys, but he only walks one guy. He makes you beat him. He makes you swing the bat. And if you have guys behind that can play defense, you’re usually going to be in it at the end.”

On Wednesday the pitching star was Jake Drossner, who scattered three hits over six innings, and struck out a scintillating nine Liberty hitters. With the win, Drossner improved his record to 3-0. Lamont Wade was 3-3 with two doubles and 3 runs batted in and Kyle Convissar also chipped in with 3 runs batted in. Maryland returns to action Friday when they travel south to open an extremely important three game series with Wake Forest. The Terps will need at least two wins in the series if they want to be a factor in the ACC race going down the wire.
